Top 10 Readers’ Photos: October 2018 in Japan

October 2018 came and went in the blink of an eye — though not before we got a little excitement in for Halloween. This month is mostly just the anticipation of that spooky holiday, strange pumpkin flavors gone amuck and the fall leaves finally turning, but still, our readers captured some worthy moments. Every month, we select our favorite travel images from readers. Tag your photo on Instagram or Twitter with #GaijinPotTravel for a chance to be featured on our site.

1.Happy Halloween!

2. Just when you think Japan can no longer surprise you… This pops up in your feed.

3. Adorbs. (PS- Mitsukejima and the surrounding area on the Noto Peninsula was one of our Top 10 Japan Travel Destinations for 2018!)

17 June 2018 Mitsukejima – also known as ‘Gunkanjima’ or ‘Battleship Island’ on account of its shape – is just a ten-minute drive south of Suzu City. Coming from Wajima, Mitsukejima was the last on our list of destinations to visit for the day: We were excited to get there just in time for sunset, but soon realised that the sun would not be setting over the ocean, but directly behind us. We’d definitely recommend getting to Mitsukejima early and catching the sunrise if you can; I’m sure the view is well worth the effort! During low tide, it’s also possible to walk along the path of rocks leading up to the island, though the surface is extremely slippery and Maki and I weren’t game enough to try it. We did venture slightly out to get these photos though, where I was once again defeated by that infernal self-timer.

Next, we had a chance to lift the buckets that are used to carry seawater in from the ocean – even empty they weighed quite a bit, so we were impressed again by how hard the farmers work to produce the salt.
