If you’re looking for a unique and exciting summer festival, look no further than the Takaoka Tanabata Festival in the Takaoka City of Toyama Prefecture. This colorful event happens every year from August 1 to 7. It celebrates the traditional Japanese Star Festival, also known as Tanabata.

A Celestial Celebration

The Tanabata Festival has its origins in a beautiful folklore tale of two celestial lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi. They are allowed to meet only once a year across the Milky Way. As you wander through the festival, you’ll see the magic of the summer night sky decorated with more than 1,000 colorful Tanabata streamers. The largest one is an impressive 20 meters tall.

During the Tanabata Festival, visitors can enjoy the impressive exhibits and also see the Great Buddha of Takaoka. As the hometown of Doraemon, the beloved robotic cat from the future, the atmosphere during the festival becomes even more delightful.

What makes the Takaoka Tanabata Festival truly special is the deep community involvement. Locals contribute to the festive atmosphere by creating homemade decorations, including wish-inscribed strips of paper and handcrafted lanterns. Throughout the festival area, visitors can express their wishes and gratitude at the Wish Tanzaku Corner. Notably, the festival offers a unique opportunity to express support for the Noto Peninsula’s recovery from the earthquake, symbolizing hope and resilience.

The 24th Takaoka Yamachosuji Storehouse Building Festival will take place in the Yamachosuji district on August 3 and 4, 2024. This district is popular for its traditional mud-walled warehouse-style residences from the early 20th century.
