This charming train travels on a 19th-century narrow-gauge railway. It provides breathtaking views of the Hozugawa River gorge, lush forests and majestic mountains. The most popular route is from Saga Torokko station to Kameoka Torokko station. It usually takes around 25 minutes to complete the entire 7 km trail. The diesel locomotive powers the train, giving it a classic look and evoking a sense of nostalgia. This train has five coaches. You can also ride in open-top car no. 5, allowing you to feel the breeze, light and sounds of nature.

A Journey Through the Seasons

Throughout the year, the Sagano Romantic Train captivates travelers with its seasonal charm. In spring, witness the beautiful cherry blossoms while feeling the tranquil atmosphere and gentle spring breeze. During the summer, you can enjoy a peaceful ride in open carriages, taking in the beauty of lush forests and clear streams. As fall begins, the train travels through a beautiful landscape filled with bright red and yellow leaves, creating a stunning natural artwork. One of the highlights of the journey is passing through the autumn foliage tunnel. The sight of the autumn leaves bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun paints a mesmerizing picture, especially as the train traverses the Hozugawa valley. The ‘Light Illusion Train’ in mid-October provides a mystical experience through illuminated areas. Winter offers the calm and simple beauty of snow-covered Arashiyama. Tourists can appreciate the unique charm of the season known as wabi-sabi. Winter illuminations can be seen from the trolley train at Hozukyo Torokko station and the surrounding area, creating a magical ambiance.

Starting from Arashiyama, you’ll find the Arashiyama Torokko station near the Jojakkoji Temple and the famous Sagano Bamboo Forest. Upon reaching the Torokko Saga Station, you have the opportunity to visit a quaint train museum.
