Mount Maya

Experience the 10-million-dollar panoramic view of Kobe.

Mount Maya is one of the main peaks in the Rokko mountain range to the north of Kobe city, and offers spectacular views  of both Kobe and Osaka.

The scene at night  is known as the “ten-million-dollar night view” and is ranked  as one of the three best  night views of Japan.

There are two options for reaching the top of the mountain: hiking or taking the Maya Viewline cable car ropeway system. Both options will take you up to the Kikuseidai Observation Platform, where you can enjoy the breath-taking scenery (day or night), have a picnic, or stop by the café for refreshments.

Mesmerizing waterfalls!

The hike begins just north of Shin-Kobe station, and first takes you past the Nunobiki Falls. These four impressive waterfalls are well worth a visit themselves. After this, the trail runs up through the forest, with an optional detour to the Nunobiki Herb Garden on the way to the summit.

Reaching Kikuseidai Observation Platform takes approximately three to five hours, depending on the route you take. Keen hikers looking for an extra challenge can go  from Mount Maya to the summit of Mount Rokko, the highest peak in the mountain range.

The Maya Viewline takes about 20 minutes to get from the base to the summit of Mt Maya. As the charming passenger cars take you up the mountain, you can watch the amazing cityscape unfold before your eyes.

Things To Know

Hiking signs

The English signage is quite limited in places during this hike, so it’s helpful to take a photo of the map at the bottom in case you lose your way. If you’re aiming for the night view, be sure ride the Maya Viewline back down as hiking in the dark can be dangerous.

How To Get There

1051-1 Notao, Awaji-shi, Hyōgo-ken 656-2222, Japan

By foot

The hiking trail to Mount Maya starts directly behind Shin-Kobe station (on the north side). After exiting the station, walk through the tunnel that runs underneath the building and head up the stairs.

If you prefer to use the cable car and ropeway, the base station is about a 40-minute walk from Shin-Kobe station. Alternatively, you can take Bus 18 from Shin-Kobe or Sannomiya station, which takes 15 to 25 minutes.
