Jogakura Bridge

Japan's longest deck arch bridge offers stunning fall views of Aomori's vibrant foliage and breathtaking natural surroundings.

By Abhijit Sen

The Jogakura Bridge in Aomori Prefecture is a popular tourist destination renowned for its stunning fall foliage and pristine natural environment. The bridge holds the title of the longest deck arch bridge in Japan. It spans 360 meters with an arch span of 255 meters and stands 122 meters above the valley floor. The construction’s total cost amounted to 87 billion yen. It opened in 1995 and serves as a vital link connecting the Tsugaru and Nanbu regions of the prefecture. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Hakkoda Mountain range and the distant outline of Mount Iwaki.

The Jogakura Ohashi Bridge is in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. This park covers parts of Aomori, Iwate and Akita Prefectures. Jogakura Stream, situated in the middle of pristine nature, flows under the bridge. The challenging terrain, weather, and highly acidic water help maintain its natural state without human intervention. During fall, the views from Jogakura Bridge transform into a mesmerizing display of vibrant red and yellow foliage. The beautiful autumn colors of beech, oak, maple, and white birch trees dye the mountains from the middle to the end of October. That offers a unique beauty compared to Japan’s traditional autumn leaf viewing. There is a sidewalk in the parking space in front of the bridge toward Sukayu Onsen. The view of the bridge and autumn leaves from there is a popular photo spot.

During the summer months, the bridge provides visitors with a different yet equally captivating experience. The beautiful green surroundings create a calm and revitalizing atmosphere. It’s perfect for nature lovers and photographers. Several meters of snow blanket the ravine in winter.

It looks beautiful year-round, especially in the fall. Visitors can also explore the Hakkoda Mountains. Hakkoda Ropeway offers an elevated perspective of the surrounding natural beauty from the summit of Tamoyachidake Peak.
