Hinode Park

A place that is quite a favorite for lovers and newlywed couples. Here both early and late blooming lavenders bloom, so flowers can be seen throughout the season.

By Abhijit Sen

Japan’s northernmost prefecture Hokkaido is world-renowned for its volcanoes, natural hot springs, ski areas and snow festivals, but its summer scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. You will find some of Japan’s finest flower fields and gardens during this time.

Hinode Park is one of the best lavender fields here in Hokkaido.

The Lavender Hill

Located north of Kamifurano Town, the park is known for its observatory, lavender field, ski area (open from mid-December to March), and RV campsites (open from late April to late October). The observatory is reached by a slight uphill climb from the parking lot.

From the 360-degree open observatory, lavender fields can be seen spreading to the northwest and the Tokachi mountain range can be seen on the east side.

Since early-blooming and late-blooming lavenders are cultivated here, flowers are usually seen from late June to mid-July. But not just lavender, there are many other seasonal flowers that can be seen such as catmint, lupine, peonies, marigolds, etc.

Another attraction of Hinode Park is the view of the setting sun and lavender. As the lavender field faces west, you can see the lavender field during the golden hour, which is quite rare in Hokkaido.

The Tale of the Bell of Love

From the observatory, a white arched bell tower can be seen in the middle of the park called the ‘Bell of Love’. There is a rumor that if you pledge your love here, it will come true, so it’s quite a popular spot for newlyweds and couples in love.

One of the main attractions here is the “Lavender Festa Kamifurano” event. When the flowers are in full bloom, illumination takes place after sunset. A panoramic view of the illuminated lavender field and the twinkling lights of a distant city create a unique sight. This event is only available during the lavender flower season and has become popular among tourists.
